When you start a conference like the European Wine Bloggers Conference, which gains traction and fans, it’s only a matter of time that others begin to find ways to attach their brand to the event; whereby giving added value to the participants (most the time). This is exactly why we founded this conference! We love to see the community grow and expand well past what we can offer, and in turn, push the envelope as to what the EWBC truly stands for (community ingenuity and innovation).

This year, we have a few people helping out in their own way, and we just want to give a quick shout out to them:

WineEverybody – Wine Everybody is a project based in France and led by the wine web agency Vinternet since 2009. This year, you can follow the EWBC at this link, where they will provide a wide range of updates and information!

Wine by the Bar – We have an iPhone app! Well sort of. The couple over at Wine By the Bar have used the Adegga database, and the amazing code called the “AVIN”, to create an iPhone, iTouch, iPad app that you can download and use. Download it onto your iPhone and see what you think.

Adegga – You’ll be hearing a lot more about these guys, but this year, they’ve developed the #EWBC wine list and also a mobile site that you can get to on almost any device! Take notes, browse wines, they have them all.

WeinWien – Ok, not really a huge help, but still super cool: Wien Wien started a blog with our name on it! Check it out! So far, they still need to clean up some of the default links, but we like the ambition! Gold star for you!

Webinars with Burgundy School of Business – If your planning on going to the webinars session on Saturday morning, you might want to sign up here: http://bit.ly/aP2mQM to make sure your an active part of the demonstration. We don’t know all that is planned, but let’s just say they hope to show that Webinars can do plenty to change the wine industry.

VinVillage - As a media sponsor they hosted an interview about the EWBC and a bit about Catavino. Thanks for the support!

There may be some rogue projects we’re not even aware of! With over 30 countries represented this year, ingenuity across borders is pulsing, but due to language barriers, we might just might now know about them.

If you have an EWBC project that you’re working on for your local community, please let us know. We’d love to hear about it!

Like the Douro Boys trip last year in the Douro Valley, we’ll have 2 amazing all-expense paid trips that will allow you to explore the vast and gorgeous wine regions of Austria. Both trips can host up to 30 participants, but you must be registered for the EWBC to sign-up for either trip.

Please note that there may also be opportunities for pre-trips outside of Austria. However, we unfortunately will not have this information for you until mid-August.

Post EWBC Trip the Danube: Kremstal DAC, Kamptal DAC and Traisental DAC
Monday, Oct 25th, 8:30 am – Tuesday, Oct 26th, 5:00 pm

This trip will show you Austria’s new origin-typical wines: Grüner Veltliner and Riesling from the Kremstal, Kamptal and Traisental DAC-regions. The first day will begin at the beautiful Stift Göttweig monastery, where you will be given an overview of the regions and their wine archetypes. This will be followed by a tasting of Kremstal DAC wines. Then, in the romantic region of Traisental, you can taste freshly picked grapes and see how they are processed. In addition, a tasting of Grüner Veltliner and Riesling musts in different stages of fermentation will help you learn more about these varieties before you taste Traisental DAC wines. The next day will feature a visit to the Kamptal, where you can participate in a harvest at the Heiligenstein, the most famous single vineyard of the region. Afterwards, Kamptal DAC wines will be waiting for you in the famous wine museum, Loisium. If time permits, a quick stroll through the museum can be taken before the return trip to Vienna.

SOLD OUT!

Post EWBC Trip Burgenland: Leithaberg DAC, Mittelburgenland DAC, Eisenberg DAC
Monday, Oct 25th, 8:30 am – Tuesday, Oct 26th, 5:00 pm

The Pannonian Plains of Hungary meet the last foothills of the Alps on Lake Neusiedl
in Burgenland. Just as the landscape is diverse and stunning – so also are the wines of Burgenland. These encompass not only the dry, mineral, vibrantly structured white wines from the slopes of the Leithaberg, but also exquisite sweet wines from the shores of Lake Neusiedl. Burgenland is also Austria’s predominant source for superb red wines, in particular from the indigenous Blaufränkisch variety. On this trip you will have the chance to compare the inimitable terroirs of the Burgenland appellations Leithaberg DAC, Mittelburgenland DAC, and Eisenberg DAC. You will encounter state-of-the-art winery architecture and meet numerous vintners. Because there is no end to food pairing options with the wines of Burgenland, you will have a chance to experience this versatility with a hearty, rustic meal in regional wine tavern as well as in a fine restaurant with haute cuisine. More exact details for this trip will follow mid-August.

And in light of our mission to spread the good word about Social Media, we decided to kick off the 2010 EWBC with a tasting of Austrian Wines spearheaded by Willi Klinger, President of the Austrian Wine Marketing Board. Have fun watching the film, and don’t forget that we’re still looking for people interested in proposing a seminar or workshop at this year’s conference!

Moderator: Ryan Opaz - Catavino.net

Time: 16:00 – 16:45 pm

Roundtable:

Esteban Cabezas – The Wine Academy Spain

Marcio Ferriera – ViniPortugal

Evelyne Resnick – Wine Brands

Theme: We will have just spent a day looking at where the world wine and online media have converged; how video is changing the way we communicate about wine; how wineries and wine bloggers can communicate better. So to end the day, we want to look at the future, and what tomorrow will bring us? Will we become more open, or will the inverse occur, creating virtual walls around individual content?

Questions:

What role will blogging have in the next 5 years of wine communication?

What importance will we place on video as we move into the next generation of wine communication?

Do Twitter and Facebook serve a purpose or are they just steps in the evolution of wine communication?

How can Generics better embrace the benefits of Social Media? And when will we see them doing more?

The Social Wine world is highly personlized and time consuming at times. Is this method sustainable, or will we see less authentic forms of it in the future?

Coming to Portugal for the EWBC in Lisbon? Cortes de Cima is inviting any interested EWBC participants to a day’s outing to the lovely Alentejo on Thursday, October 29th - an opportunity not to be missed!

Cortes de Cima has been a supporter in the form of wine of both the #EWBC 2008 and the #WBC 2009, and we were also the first Portuguese winery to start a winery blog over 1 year ago.

I think my first post from our blog sums it up nicely as to why we believe so strongly in these events:

Cortes de Cima is renown in Portugal as a pioneer and even a renegade. Perhaps because we arrived here as foreigners 20 years ago (Hans the winemaker is Danish, and I, the marketing manager, am from California) we’ve always tended to do things differently, even sometimes, downright ‘illegal’. We were Portuguese pioneers in creating our winery website back in 1999, and again pioneers in being the first winery to sell online. By once again being pioneers in Portugal by starting this winery blog, we will endeavor to live up to the Bob Dylan quote, printed on the back label of our ‘illegal’ Syrah wine,’ Incógnito’ – ‘To live outside the law you must be honest’ . We hope to give you an ‘honest’ insight into the daily goings on here at Cortes de Cima, even when we are a bit ‘outside the law’…(more on that later!)

Where Your Adventures Begins

We will start off with a guided vineyard and winery tour at Cortes de Cima, to work up your thirst and appetite. As the olive harvest, is sure to have started, you should also have the chance to see olive picking first hand!

Next, we will serve lunch based on the local Alentejan specialties, local lamb, fresh goat cheese, stone oven bread, and of course Cortes de Cima’s own extra virgin olive oil!

To accompany the buffet lunch, we will open the full range of our wines and do a live wine tasting with the winemakers themselves on hand! You can log onto our wifi in our tasting room, and Twitter while you Taste! (Don’t forget to enjoy the breathtaking views from our tasting room across our own vineyards and the rolling Alentejan plains!)

Afterwards, we will visit a nearby village, Vila de Frades, where the Roman tradition is still alive of making wines in old clay pots, or ‘Talhas’ (like the pot we use on the Cortes de Cima label). Goat cheese artisans and bread makers using stone ovens are also nestled behind the picturesque village walls, for those who want to have a quick peek!

Also in Vila de Frades, and not to be missed, are the amazing ruins of S. Cucufate, one of the largest and best preserved Roman villa in the Iberian peninsula.

If you are driving, plan to stop in Évora on the way back to Lisbon, a unique UNESCO world heritage site!

Transport: If you have your own wheels, it’s a 2hr drive from Lisbon. http://cortesdecima.com/tourism/visit-us/

Alternatively, take the train (www.cp.pt) and we will arrange a pickup and drop-off from the Cuba train station, 15 mins away.

Lisbon – Gare do Oriente Departure: 09h10 Arrival to Cuba: 11h19

We believe that whoever loves wine, also loves to discover!

In Portugal there is still a considerable amount to discover. Historically, Portuguese wine has slowly gained traction outside of the country’s borders, but as a result of a new generation of winemakers rediscovering the many autochthonous grapes which give a unique character to Portuguese wine, our fame has begun to spread like wildfire.

Our team at DOC-DMC has come a long way in organizing events, incentives and trips. This know-how combined with traditional gastronomy and the beautiful countryside makes wine trips to Portugal an irresistible choice.

This is why we are sponsoring the EWBC. We are fully aware that Portugal needs all the help it can get in spreading the word about our local treasures. From our varied and distinct traditional cuisine to our vast and changing landscapes, we can only hope that you as bloggers will fall equally in love with our wine, food and culture as we have.

And how do we convince you of our unique treasures? We will bring you on a full day adventure on Sunday through the wine regions of Setubal and Terras do Sado, where you will visit 3 wineries varying in size and style, a traditional tile factory and dine on a vast array of traditional Portuguese foods. It is our hope that by the end of your trip, you will not only have a fundamental understanding of these two regions, but also a desire to come back and visit again. Full Schedule of Sunday Trip is listed below

What else can DOC-DMC offer a passionate wine lover?

Gastronomic trips to Portugal for individual travellers or small groups to all well known DOC Areas from the Minho to the Douro and from the Dão , to the Ribatejo, Alentejo or the recently “re-animated” Algarve.

Offers for weekend stays combined with a round of golf, or even a relaxing day spa.

Events related with wine: team building and wine courses, eno-gastronomic dinners or wine tastings in charming settings.

“Winelands of Portugal “, are travel books which will allow you to discover the best wineries, cellars or other selected tasting venues of the most important DOC areas, as well as a choice of restaurants in order to enjoy the best of local gastronomy. Based on the suggestions of “Winelands” you will also be able to make your own itinerary choosing from the suggested venues, enjoying wine tasting, lunch or dinner using the vouchers included in the travel book. This product will be available on the internet this year and is currently sold in the reception of over 30 of the best hotels of Portugal.

Moreover we are the exclusive dealers of the Enomatic Wine Serving Systems in Portugal, a technology we import from Italy which is a leading product for conserving and selling wine by glass.

Our small selection and distribution of “Vinhos de Quinta”, wines with an excellent price – quality relationship produced by smaller wineries. Similar to a boutique sales, “Vinhos de Quinta” has found clientele among Lisbon’s best restaurants and hotels who love to introduce and discover new brands and tastes of Portuguese wines.

Clube Doc aims to promote the Portuguese DOC Areas and wines to people in Portugal. Be it a gastronomic dinner to discover flower and fruity notes in red wines, an excursion to the unknown wine area east of Lisbon, or a trip to the wine harvest in Douro, the Clube Doc Calender organizes monthly gatherings!

We are elated to have you join us, and hope that we can be a resource for you if you should ever have questions about the wine, food and culture of Portugal!

Sincerely,

The DOC-DMC Team

Schedule:

09:30 – Pick up

10:15 – The Day will start with a visit of the prestigious winery “Bacalhôa Vinhos de Portugal”, which is the result of nearly 82 years of dedication to the production of wine. The innovative character of this winery is the combination of tradition with state of the art technology, which results in an annual average production of nearly 12 million litters of wine. This magnificent winery is part of the “Grupo dos Sete” (Group of Seven), a unique organization which gathers seven of the most significant private companies of the Portuguese wine industry. The winery is owned mostly by one of the most important Portuguese patrons of modern art, José Berardo and has a large art collection spread all over the property. Finalizing the visit you will have the opportunities to taste some of the renowned Bacalhoa Vinhos.

11:30 – We will next visit the historical and traditional winery José Maria da Fonseca, a family run business established in 1834, with a background of two centuries in the art of wine making. Piriquita is their most famous brand, in fact ,the first of all table wines produced in Portugal. A further hightlight of the visit will be the Moscatel Wine cellar with thousands of precious well aged bottles or this sweet fortified wine. This winery indeed has some stories to tell ! A tasting of several of their red wines and of course Moscatel will follow the visit, accompanied by the no less famous cheese and the traditional bread of this charming village.

12:30 – Our next stop will be by the “São Simão” workshop, where the ancient tile painting tradition is still carried on to this day. We will be able to see the artists at work and thereby learn some of the secrets of this trade. The exhibition rooms display glazed tile panels and porcelain pieces decorated with the patterns and colors of the 18th century.

13:30 – A fantastic buffet, prepared by the famous restaurant Alcanena, is awaiting us now. On the table you will find a selection of Portuguese cheeses, sausages and smoked meats, 16 traditional cold salads, various soups as well as several different Portuguese meats and fish, such as hare with white beans, partridge pie, pork meat Alentejo style, duck rice, fried entrecote with rice and beans, seafood “açorda”, spiritual codfish, calamari Algarve style and many others. But the meal is only finished after the dessert: egg pudding, milk cream, chocolate mousse, almond cake, orange cake and cheese cake are some of the delicacies we will be able to taste.

15:30 – When this superb meal is finished we will proceed to the nearby winery “Horácio Simões”, in order to taste the Moscatel de Setúbal and the Moscatel Roxo, still made in traditional grape presses, as well as the Aguardente Velha.

16:30 – Return trip to the hotel.

One of the things first-time visitors to Lisbon notice immediately at the end of the day is that the Portuguese dine much later than elsewhere in Europe. The Iberian custom of dining at 8 or 9PM is pushed even further on weekend nights when it’s not unusual to book a restaurant for 9:30 or 10PM. After a long meal followed by the obligatory cup of coffee, and lots of talking in between, it’s possible to find yourself leaving a restaurant at well past midnight. That’s very early in Lisbon time, meaning that a bar is the next destination for a caipirinha or a special cocktail. When all is said and done, it’s around 3 or 4AM, and for many young people with plenty of energy left, it’s time to hit the clubs by the riverfront. That means that they’ll also wake up very late in the following morning (or afternoon), and that’s what may explain the rising trend of the weekend brunch in Lisbon.

Until not too long ago there weren’t many options in the city for the meal combining breakfast and lunchtime food, but that has changed dramatically over the past couple of years, and there are now many attractive places to choose from if you find yourself being dragged through the night during your stay in Lisbon and wake up well past your hotel’s breakfast time.

Here are 5 of the best brunch spots in Lisbon:

DELI DELUX – This gourmet shop/cafeteria across the street from Santa Apolónia Station was one of the first to introduce the brunch concept in Lisbon and remains one of the most popular. Every Saturday and Sunday between 10AM and 4PM there are two menus to choose from, served indoors or at the very pleasant terrace facing the river. Expect freshly squeezed juice, bread and croissants, yogurt with muesli, and/or scrambled eggs. Also expect to wait in line for a table if you show up closer to the usual lunch time.
(Avenida Infante D. Henrique, Armazem B Loja

KAFFEEHAUS – This current favorite cafe in the Chiado district offers Viennese ambience and flavors. For 8.90 euros, you may get Austrian bread with cold cuts, cheese, eggs, and yogurt. A few tables are placed by the door outside on good-weather days, and there are international publications and the newspapers of the day available inside.
(Rua Anchieta, 3)

MENSAGEM – The most expensive and sophisticated brunch in Lisbon is at this cafe in the Altis Belem Hotel. It faces a marina halfway between the Discoveries Monument and the landmark Belem Tower, and offers a special meal for 30 euros (drinks not included). Sit at one of the outdoor tables and enjoy the pleasant surroundings as you sample a rich buffet of meats, cheeses, fruits, breads, and pastries.
(Doca do Bom Sucesso)

POIS CAFE – Just like Kaffeehaus mentioned above, “Pois” is an Austrian-owned café. It is found around the corner from Lisbon’s medieval cathedral in the Alfama district and offers one of the most laid-back ambiences of any café in the city. Decorated with charming mismatched furniture, its brunch includes tea, coffee, or hot chocolate, fresh fruit juices, and a variety of cheeses, hams, and breads. All for 10 euros.
(Rua São João da Praça, 93-95)

SÃO ROQUE MUSEUM CAFÉ- A recently-renovated museum of sacred art also houses a café in a wonderful Asian-inspired courtyard. Between 10AM and 6PM on weekends you may have a fruit juice, coffee, or tea, with eggs, bacon, toasted bread, scones, cheese, and hams. The total cost is 10 euros.
(Largo Trindade Coelho, 21)

For more ideas and choices for a light meal in Lisbon, see GoLisbon’s cafés recommendations.

Entry into the drawing was relatively straightforward: write a post on either Portuguese wine tasting hosted at Aldea Restaurant in NYC or the American Wine Bloggers Conference in California, or if you could not make it, write on ViniPortugal and the current state of Portuguese wines.

Winners Receive:

1st Place = All Expense Paid Trip to the EWBC

2nd Place = Case of Portuguese Wine

3rd Place = Charles Metcalfe’s book “Wine and Food Lovers’ Guide to Portugal”

Entries into the drawing were both numerous and exciting to read. The majority of entries admitted their lack of knowledge on this diverse and unique wine country, but also tended to fawn over the quality of wines tasted. With a good quality to price ratio, wines were said to be unique as a result of native grape varieties, bright in acidity and tasted of their specific terroir. However, not all was rosy and bright. Participants also suggested that Portuguese wines were difficult to come by, and that Portuguese grape names were a quite difficult to learn, remember and pronounce.

What’s so great for us is the fact that people are at least talking about Portuguese wine, and we can only hope that this conversation will not only become more prevalent but more profound in the months to come!

Enough said Let’s announce the WINNERS!

Editor’s Note: On Sunday, November 1st, EWBC participants will have the option of choosing from 1 of 3 different wine roadtrips. Each option will highlight a different Portuguese wine region and its wines, allowing you time in the field to ask questions of the winemaker’s themselves. Over the course of the next few weeks, we’ll be publishing information from each of the sponsors, who will not only give you background on who they are, but what makes their wine roadtrip unique to them. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to put them in the comment’s section below.

Please note that we will have a sign-up page in the coming month that will let you choose from the trips available.

Amorim is the world’s largest natural cork company, selling three billion closures every year to thousands of wineries in all continents. That may sound mammoth, but with 468 million Euros in annual sales, we are a tiny speck when compared to what some plastic and aluminum companies can sell. As such, we try to make sure the closure debate continues to move away from the one-sided, almighty “I can deliver perfection in this world” initial phase to a fact-based approach, bringing the debate to more rational levels and leveling the playing field.

Amorim has been a supporter of the conference since the very first edition of the EWBC and have never doubted that Ryan, Gabriella and the whole team behind that original Rioja event, were right in identifying the blogosphere as a key medium going forward. As mentioned before, we need to level the playing field when discussing wine closures, and the blogosphere is the great equalizer.

We are opening the Amorim doors to opinion makers that have often discussed wine closures but, in many cases, have not had the chance to collect first-hand, critical information about cork and cork forests. We will visit cork forests where Amorim sources its raw material from, follow the material through different closure production steps, including visiting the world’s largest wine stopper manufacturing plant, and finally, talk to the people that make this entire process happen. In addition, we’ll taste some delicacies from those cork forests while sipping some local wine. So we are taking the whole gang onto a bus for an encompassing and informative visit, while having the first closure debate on wheels. We want that debate to be no-holds barred; consequently, bring all of your questions, concerns and confusions!

9h00 – Pick up at VIP Grand Lisboa Hotel

10h00 – Visit Lagoalva (Cork Forest and Estate)
Its long history as a wine producer can be seen from the fact that in 1888 it was present at the Portuguese Industrial Exhibition with 600 wine casks.

The estate, which formerly belonged to the 2nd Duke of Palmela, has passed to his descendants and is now the property of Sociedade Agrícola da Quinta da Lagoalva de Cima, S.A. The 4th Duke of Palmela introduced horses and bulls to the estate in 1909. The estate’s Lusitano horses were bred from brood mares of the National Stud (Coudelaria Nacional), later improved with the use of stallions from the stud owned by Manuel Tavares Veiga.

12h30 – Lunch at Lagoalva with a Tejo D.O.C. region’s wine tasting
The Portuguese Government has announced the new D.O.C. region of wine production. Tejo is the a new region according to the Portuguese Ministry of Agriculture. The new region is a requalification of the former Ribatejo region (now Tejo). The new Tejo region will offer wines called Vinho Regional Tejo. And, it will offer six sub-regions Almeirim, Cartaxo, Chamusca, Coruche, Santarém and Tomar. Tejo has 20,000 metric acres of wines growth, offering about 10 million certified bottles a year.

14h00 – Visit to AI Coruche
In this unit, as large as several football fields, huge quantities of harvested cork planks are stored for seasoning, right before cork initiates its production processing. At this recently-inaugurated plant, you will be able to see first-hand some of the quality measures designed and implemented by Amorim to produce a high quality product as demanded by the market.

15h15 – Return to hotel
